The Next Journey Around the Sun

Do you think of space, planet Earth or our solar system when every year comes to an end?

I recently heard a news anchor say that "we’re approaching the beginning of our next journey around the sun." 

Instead of the ball dropping in Times Square, fireworks and champagne, it’s intriguing to prepare for the start of a new year and new beginnings with this perspective.

What have we accomplished on this last loop? Has 2016 been a successful journey or a rocky orbit?

Just within this past month, ScienceDaily.com published a story about how the sun will be a hundred times bigger in a few million years. They pose the question, “Will Earth still exist five billion years from now?”

Some may say that it makes no difference to them, but the stamp we make upon our planet now will be part of its development. What legacy do we leave and give back to this ball of rock and water which has provided us life?

How do you plan to begin your next journey around the sun? What do you want? What is your dream?

A Season to Give, A Season to Receive

Have you taken a moment to pause and count your blessings? I have found myself pausing many times to count mine. Reflecting over this past year and how YOU are the Key has become a dream come true in countless ways, I am truly blessed.

The year began with the decision to publish my story about the dream of the three keys which came into my life more than twenty years ago. This led to writing the eBook YOU are the Key, followed by the development of the Self-Discovery Course, The Self-Discovery Lecture Series and designing more key plans for the future.

And here we are! The YOU are the Key Self-Discovery Course begins on January 4^th of 2017! I’ll be instructing this 6-week course at the Career & Technology Education Centers of Licking County, 150 Price Rd. in Newark, Ohio, beginning Wednesday, January 4^th at 7pm.

The YOU are the Key Self-Discovery Course is highly recommended for high school and college students, military veterans, people with disabilities, entrepreneurs and senior citizens.

My Dream has the Key!

Dream or Fantasy?

Maya Angelou once said, “A solitary fantasy can transform a million realities.”

Each individual has their own talent, skill and desire. Thus, each one of us will have our own unique path and design for getting from point A to point B. It would be great if we could move our game board piece to GO, collect our two-hundred dollars and simply head out and see where we land. That is fantasy.

We have the ability to transform our vision or lofty dreams into reality.

Several years ago, I composed a song titled, Where the Eagles Fly! In writing the lyrics, a very powerful statement poured into my heart, as if it were delivered directly from my
soul . . .

   “I believe that I can sing the song and I can dance the dance.”

As a songwriter and author, I have learned and believe that I alone do not write the words and create the melodies. We must always remember that just like the gift of life and the measurement of time, these gifts are on loan. It’s our mission to find a way to share them with the world while we have the chance and the proverbial clock keeps ticking.

It’s time to cease being the keeper of the keys, storing your dreams in notebooks and shoe boxes or holding them up in a medieval-like tower as a prisoner, but how do you know when they’re ready to be unleashed and set free?

Before you take that leap of faith, have you established that your dream is real, not a pipe-dream or a flight of your imagination? Like a fairytale, is it simply a whim destined to exist only as a memory? Once upon a time, there was a dream.

So, is your dream ready? Has it begun to dictate to you, make demands, or reveal what it wants to become? You may have heard me say it before, but I’ll repeat . . .

Boot Camp for the Brain

As you continue to journal your dreams and goals, how often is exercise on your list? Daily maintenance for the body and for the brain is essential.

Whether you keep a steady diet of doing Sudoku or walk 2-5 miles every morning, you’re participating in a commitment to better health and longevity. Merely staying active, even if chair-bound there are ways to move and improve circulation. Simple stretches while lying in bed before rising enliven the body and the brain.

Many of us have parents or grandparents who suffer from Alzheimer’s and at one time or another considered the possibilities of being stricken ourselves. A recent study at UCLA monitored daily activities of 876 individuals, men and women aged 65 and up. Those who were found to be more active have a fifty percent reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

However, science will always prove the very fact that exercise is critical for a healthy lifestyle. Those stricken with a disease have a better chance of quality of life with some form of physical and mental exercise.

Let’s take a look at a woman who was diagnosed with arthritis 25 years ago and still lives to this day in a 3-story home. Family and friends try to persuade her to downsize to a one-bedroom flat, but she insists that the need to climb and descend the stairs keeps her in shape. Not only is she allowing her brain to communicate with her body to meet the demands of navigating up and down, but her body sends messages back to the brain of mission accomplished.

According to studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, strength training encourages the pulses of blood to the brain. Those who stay with a regimen of strength training excel in mental skills testing as well.

It has also been found that sedentary people who changed their habits and walked forty minutes daily, grew a larger brain after studies had shown their brains had begun to shrink. Thus, bigger brains can progress into the same state as a younger brain.

Just when you try to talk yourself into starting tomorrow instead of today, STOP! Remind yourself of the critical importance to oxygenate the blood and focus on optimal flow of blood to your brain. Your brain is waiting. Your body is waiting. Your dream is waiting, (unless it finds another dreamer).

Keeping that communication going between your brain and your body is always a work in progress. Focus, stamina and overall well being have a better chance. When you add it all up, it’s everything you must do to achieve your dream and happiness in your life. As always, recommended hours per week and type of activity should be discussed with your doctor. Have a plan and commit. YOU are the Key!

Stay active and resilient. YOU are the Key!

Across the Field

Football season. All over America, it’s in the air. You can smell it, sense it, taste it and hear the beating of the drums. Teams are practicing in the heat and humidity. Marching bands are tweaking their chops and practicing hitting their marks. Coaches from high school to college are preparing for a successful season and praying they’ll hold on to their jobs.

What is on everyone’s mind across the field? It’s easy-one guess. On everyone’s mind is what it’s going to take: to succeed, to execute every play, to score, to become champions. To become the best in defense and the best in offense, it’s going to take Self-Confidence. For each player and each and every coach, it’s going to take Believing in one’s self.

Let’s say you’re playing “center” on offense. The referee blows the whistle, the quarterback cues the play and you’re holding the ball. You are the Key. From your hands the ball is in play and what will be its fate?

Jump to the other side of the scrimmage line. You’re a “tackle” on defense for the opposing team. This is not the time to be dreaming of one day playing in the Super Bowl, but what your responsibility is in the present moment. You are the Key.

If you recall in an earlier blog, I wrote about Leonardo da Vinci’s Seven Principles. Consider the outcome of each game or an entire season if every coach, every player, every member of the marching band and every cheerleader focused on Principle #7- Connessione- the recognition of and appreciation for the phenomenal interconnectedness of all things.

Service to Our Community

This week, I was a guest speaker for the Heath Moundbuilders Kiwanis organization in Central Ohio. What a lovely group and I thank them all for the opportunity to share YOU are the Key.

The members of the Heath Moundbuilders Kiwanis understand what it is to dare to dream. It’s so important to brainstorm with our neighbors in our local communities and hear their ideas. I envision the dreamers and designers of our community’s future within organizations like the Heath Moundbuilders Kiwanis.

We have a lot on our plates- personal life, relationships, career, health, well-being, security, where we choose to reside and how we live our lives.

In a world of uncertainty, we are all concerned about what lies ahead. However, no matter who is to become the next leader of the USA and who attempts to control our destiny; the cost of living; and the price of freedom, it remains and always will be our responsibility to uphold the dignity, credibility and safety of our home town community. 

Remember that sign on Harry Truman’s desk? “The Buck Stops Here.” It rests on a shelf in a museum now, but its sentiment and the power in those words survive.

In our home town, county, state and country- We are the Key!

Someone in your neighborhood, your home town or a few miles down the road needs what you have to share. Your wisdom and experience can make a difference. Service to our community is part of our growth and development in life.

Curiosita- the unrelenting quest for continuous learning.

As we celebrate our freedom in the USA on this Fourth of July, here is a sampling from my latest eBook A State of Grace.  For many, this is an untold story of hope and freedom.

The Moses of Her People

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery on a Maryland plantation in 1820. History documents that she risked her life to rescue countless other slaves. Her acts of courage laid the groundwork that freed thousands. Born Araminta Harriet Ross, she was beaten, abused and witnessed the selling and trading of slaves most of her young life. Harriet already had the physical and emotional scars.

Harriet was in a store buying supplies one day, when another slave tried to run away. The storeowner demanded that she run after the slave and bring him back. When Harriet refused, the storeowner grabbed a two-pound weight and slammed it into Harriet’s head, breaking her skull. Miraculously, she survived her injuries, but throughout her life, she suffered from seizures and headaches. Harriet claimed to be a devout Christian and began to experience visions of which she believed were from God, sending her on a mission to end slavery.

At the age of twenty-four, she married John Tubman, a free black man. Five years later, in 1849, she escaped from her slave owner’s mansion in an attempt to free herself and settled in Philadelphia. From her home base, she traveled on several missions back to Maryland and elsewhere to free more slaves. Networking with other abolitionists, Harriet became very active in the Underground Railroad, assisting numerous others into a life of freedom.

From 1861 to 1865, Harriet Tubman forged on with her mission working for the Union Army as a nurse, teacher, scout and even a spy. Several months after the Civil War came to an end, she nursed injured soldiers in Virginia while still caring for her aging parents. On one of her train trips back north, the conductor forced her to move to the smoking car because of the color of her skin. Harriet informed him of her service to the U.S. government, but the conductor threw her into the smoking car, causing several injuries. White passengers on the train cursed at her and demanded that she be thrown off the train.

On March 10, 1913, Harriet passed away from pneumonia at the age of ninety-three. Known as The Moses of Her People, Harriet Tubman captured the hearts and respect of people around the world for her courage and compassion, in addition to her ability to forgive.

The Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn, New York, is a National Landmark, administered by the AME Zion Church. As a museum and education center, it welcomes visitors from all over the globe.

Control + Alt + Delete

Imagine a way you could control, alter or delete your goals. What if you could control-alt-delete your entire life? It would be incredible to hit control-make-it-happen. 

You may recall that I entered the FedEx Grant contest and thank you all once again for your votes! On June 20^th, Fed Ex released the Top 100, vying for the final prize of $25,000. I didn’t make the cut, but still grateful for the opportunity and becoming one of their applicants who made it to the first round.

Understanding that FedEx was seeking a for-profit business that ships a lot of product with substantial weight, I still went for it. If you order one of my products, music CDs, books or courses, they’ll arrive in small packages. However, if you’re a warehouse/distributor and you want to purchase multitudes of what I offer, we can make that happen!

With that said, still, rejection is purely fuel for the fire.  It calls for more research and doing the necessary homework. What other grants are available? In general, who might be interested in sponsoring what you do or what you’re selling?

Rejection is not failure. In many ways, you can learn from the experience by believing that it wasn’t meant to be or wouldn’t have been then right fit. It’s certainly wise to take a chance. What is meant to be will be. Focus on the experience. It may surprise you.
